If your dough is too sticky, you probably need to add a bit more flour. If it’s a little sticky, it’s fine. You don’t want to add too much flour or your rolls will be too dense.

What If My Dough Is Too Dry?

If your dough is too dry, you add too much flour. Add a bit more water to make it soft and pliable. It’s better to have a slightly sticky dough than to have a dry dough.

My Rolls Didn’t Rise, What Happened?

Check your yeast, it may be expired. That’s why it’s important not to skip the first step. Proofing the yeast must be done with warm water. If the water is too hot, you might kill the yeast and the bread will not rise. Mix the yeast with a little warm water and sugar. Let it sit for about 5-7 minutes. If it’s not bubbly and foamy, the yeast has expired.

Ingredients

  • 1 Packet active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm water
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup melted butter

Instructions

  • Dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm (not hot!) water, in a medium-sized bowl. Let it sit for 5-7 minutes until foamy and bubbly. Whisk in the eggs, milk, and salt. Set aside.
  • Place the flour in a large bowl and make a well in the middle. Pour the yeast mixture into the well and let stand for 30 minutes without mixing.
  • Pour in the melted butter and mix until a soft ball forms. Transfer to the counter and knead until it is not sticky any more. You may need to add a bit more flour.
  • Place the dough in a large, oiled bowl and let rise, covered with a damp cloth, for 30 minutes in a warm, draft-free place.
  • Punch down the dough and transfer it to a floured surface. Divide into 15 equal parts and shape them into balls by rolling them between the heel of your palm and the counter.
  • Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with oil and place the dough balls inside. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise for 30 mins in a warm, draft-free place.
  • Preheat the oven to 400 F. Brush the rolls with melted butter and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
