Equipment

  • Sharp knife and cutting board
  • 9x13-inch casserole dish
  • Cheese grater
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • Cooking spray
  • 3 large Vidalia onions (about 2 ½ lb), sliced to ¼-inch thickness
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp parsley flakes
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • ½ tsp mustard powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 4 tbsp butter, sliced
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar, freshly shredded
  • 1 cup Gouda, freshly shredded

Instructions

  • Spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray and preheat the oven to 350 F. Spray a large sheet of foil with cooking spray so it doesn't stick to the cheese.
  • Combine the dried herbs, garlic powder, mustard powder, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper in a small bowl.
  • Place the sliced onions in a bowl and sprinkle the spice mix over them. Toss to coat and place them in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the onions, place butter slices on top, cover with foil and bake for 40 mins. Remove the foil and bake for 30 minutes more or until the cheese is slightly brown and crispy.
